When Eveliina Yli-Salomäki began her UX Designer Trainee role at Mylab in May, she did not arrive with a fixed picture of what to expect. It was her first real experience in the field, so she came in ready to learn rather than with a set agenda. 

I did not have very specific expectations. This was my first real experience in the industry, so I kept an open mind.

A bigger product than expected 

The scale of Mylab’s product turned out to be one of the biggest surprises for Eveliina. University projects tend to be smaller in scope and aimed at consumers, while Mylab’s system is a large B2B platform built for diagnostics and healthcare professionals. 

The scope of the product was surprising overall. School exercises have been much narrower, and it has also been very different working with a B2B product. Student projects, even with real clients, were usually built for a broader audience rather than a specific professional group.

Getting hands on with the design system

Eveliina’s biggest project of the summer has been the company’s design system. She joined right as a new version was taking shape, updating colors and fonts to match Mylab’s refreshed brand, fixing components together with a colleague, and later expanding the system with more complex patterns such as dialogs. 

Even though it had already been worked on before I joined, the design system has now been developed further, and I have been able to contribute something useful to it.

Learning by doing 

One highlight of the summer has definitely been experimenting with Claude alongside Figma, exploring how AI tools could support design work. Eveliina has also joined the UX team’s discussions on bringing AI into the workflow. 

Her colleagues noticed her impact too. Hanne Frisk, our Lead UX Designer, who worked closely with Eveliina over the summer, shared this: 

Eveliina took charge of the situation quickly, and we moved from guiding to working and brainstorming together in no time. She fit into the team right away and jumped into all kinds of tasks and meetings with enthusiasm. She leaves a real gap in the team, and I hope our paths will cross again. 

What especially has made the traineeship valuable for Eveliina was the mix of hands on work and observation, and being trusted to build things independently. 

Looking ahead

My biggest goal for this job was to get to see the practice, the practical side that studies do not always show very well.

Looking back at the goal she set at the start of summer, that is exactly what has happened. Next, Eveliina is starting her thesis, carrying this practical experience forward with her.
